The Three Must Haves to Make it in Men’s Fashion

May 31st, 2010 by Ahoola

So you want to design men’s fashions, eh? Looks easy, right? It’s only a matter of stitching some seams, choosing some color combinations and slapping the occasional pocket across the front left chest, yes? Not so fast. First, and consider this your fair warning, it’s brutal. It is as brutal -and some say even more brutal- than trying to break into women’s fashion. Why, you ask? It’s simple: Men’s fashion designers have to keep reinventing the wheel season after season. With women’s fashions, they’re prone to fall in love with the craziest trends. A hat with a decorative feather that reaches a planes flying altitude? Sure - we’ll order 5,000 of them. Plastic bra strap? You got it! Never mind the misery a woman feels with plastic laying across her shoulders. Still, for ages, women have shoved their 29 inch waists into 20 inch dresses - and then bragged about it! It’s just the way it is.

Men, on the other hand, yeah…not so easy. First, they’re not as quick to jump on the fashion trend wagon. For them, it’s about comfort and quality - and they want to know that pesky beer stain will wash out on laundry day. That makes it tough when each new season, you’re attempting to raise the bar and bring something front and center that’s not been “done to death”. So what does it take to make it in men’s fashions? We asked some of the best of the best and here’s what they had to say:

? Tough skin. Let’s say that together: TOUGH SKIN. Men’s fashion, while not as risqu? as women’s fashions, is still cut throat industry. It’s competitive and not for the weak-willed.

? A sixth sense in knowing what will work and what will be a flop on the runways. And just because your red gingham doesn’t work on the runway doesn’t mean another designer introduces red gingham that flies off the shelves. A lot of it has to do with timing and the tiniest nuances that are invisible to an untrained eye.

? Perseverance is crucial. Without it, you might as well go home. It’s not easy and for many, there are no rewards at the end of the journey. But when you have that first runway show, followed that superb reviews, you know it was worth the sacrifice. Just be warned: those sacrifices just might be your undoing before you ever have the opportunity to walk the runway with your models wearing your best efforts.

Fashion Trends For 2010

May 21st, 2010 by Ahoola

Before another year starts, fashion experts and designers always present us with what they think will be the new trends for the coming year. Some designs are made for a particular season while some are made to be fashionable throughout the year. Some even stay fashionable within the next couple of years. Here are some of the trends that are presented as the “in” thing this year.

The year 2010 is said to be outrageous in terms of clothing as extreme colors and prints are in fashion. Animal prints such as leopard dots are the main eye catchers. Metallic colors like gold and silver are also in fashion. To neutralize the flashy appearance of the prints, neutral colors such as beige and grey are also a definite hit for items such as coats and blazers. See-through top may also be sought out as the season becomes hotter.

Meanwhile, some old designs for shorts and pants are back. Items such as hot pants and jumpsuits are back in fashion. They are best paired with long socks or stockings up to or above the knee. For those who do not prefer to wear the shorts yet still want to show some skin, long skirts and dresses with high splits can keep you look sexy. The split can even be higher than shorts to reveal more skin yet hide more at the same time. Just like with the top, the pants can either have prints and patterns or just come in plain color. Aside from animal prints, abstract, floral and other strong prints brighten up the usually boring color of pants. Ruffles and feathers on skirts and shorts are also in fashion and are paired with neutral-colored tops as complement. Another old-school style that is back is torn and ripped jeans. Patched jeans are also one way to go if desired. The theme of rock-and-roll is something that never gets old.

As for the footwear, neutral tones are mostly worn to complement the catchy prints of the top or the pants. Flats, clogs, wedges and new Oxford shoes are in season.

Women’s fashion accessories such as the earrings also sport the animal prints. For those who feel uncomfortable wearing large prints of leopard dots on their clothes, the earrings are perfect for you to stay in fashion. Talk about animalistic fashion for this year. Large hair accessories are also coming back in fashion. Rock-and-roll and urban accessories are also sought after. Bracelets, studs, rings and chain necklaces can be used to accessorize the torn pants and printed top. As also mentioned, tall socks and torn stockings can be worn with the hot pants and jumpsuit.

This year’s fashion trend for women is feminine yet edgy, a mixture of extreme prints and plain, neutral colors. As the year progresses and seasons change, more fashion trends will surely emerge so stay updated. You should also remember that even if some items in your wardrobe are out of fashion, they should be kept for the future. Who knows when they might be back in fashion again?

Spring Fashion

May 12th, 2010 by Ahoola

Spring is here!

After such a long and dismal winter why am I not jumping up and down with glee? As a larger lady, I dread the thought of long summer days and having to resort to flashing my flesh.

I look at the choice of clothes displayed in the shops - capped sleeves (great for bingo wings) and big flowing tops with no style or shape - I am spoilt for choice! Some high street stores have even gone as far as to make the nice short minis and cropped vest tops in my slender size 18 right up to size 28 - how thoughtful!

Why does our fashion industry insist on one style suits all? Why can’t larger ladies have a fashion style all of their own? I know this is no easy feat, but the scope for this has surely got to be worth the investment. I appreciate that as a society we are encouraged to be healthy, to exercise and to loose weight and in an ideal world I would agree. But what about those of us who are big boned, or those of us which through medical conditions carry excess weight? Are we destined for a life of shapeless tops and low boring heels? When will a designer realise that larger women exist and that they too want to look beautiful and feel sexy?

My friends and I are all similar sizes, yet our body shapes’ are completely different. Now I know that this rule applies right across the sizing spectrum, but as you get into the bigger sizes the differences are much more noticeable. Some retailers are certainly improving with sleeker lines and sharper cuts, but COME ON, a size 18 lady comes in many different shapes - am I quite curvaceous and carry my excess weight around my stomach and on my legs, with my friend it is all on her boobs - so a size 18 fitted jacked looks great on me - yet it does nothing for her because the cut is all wrong. So what do we do? Perhaps it’s time to re-consider the way that we size clothes? Years ago I could walk into any shop and buy a size 16, knowing that it would fit. Nowadays my clothes range from a size 16 right up to a size 22 depending on where the clothes are being purchased and the style. No wonder that the once joyful experience of spending money on clothes has vanished only to be replaced with one of dread.

I want to be proud of my size - I want to feel sexy - where’s Gok Wan when you need him!
